Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday extended his best wishes for good health to Jagdeep Dhankhar, following the latter’s unexpected resignation from the post of Vice President of India, citing health concerns.
In a post on X, PM Modi acknowledged Dhankhar’s long and distinguished service to the nation.
“Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji has got many opportunities to serve our country in various capacities, including as the Vice President of India. Wishing him good health,” the Prime Minister wrote.
The Rajya Sabha, which Dhankhar also chaired as Vice President, formally announced his resignation on Tuesday, shortly before adjourning proceedings amid ongoing opposition protests. The Ministry of Home Affairs conveyed the resignation via an official notification under Article 67(a) of the Constitution.
Dhankhar submitted his resignation to President Droupadi Murmu on Monday evening, stating in his letter:v“To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately.”
In his letter, Dhankhar also expressed gratitude to President Murmu, Prime Minister Modi, and the Council of Ministers for their support, as well as to Members of Parliament for their warmth and cooperation during his tenure.
Jagdeep Dhankhar was sworn in as the 14th Vice President of India on August 11, 2022. His resignation came on the opening day of the monsoon session of Parliament, prompting speculation and reactions from across the political spectrum.
